Hosts Needed -
Are you interested in hosting a New member Social in your home? If so, please call New Member Chairs Dick & Julia deLisser at 432-8998.
New Member Social - A New Member Social will not be held during the month of May. Please check the June issue of the Nugget News for the date and time of the next New Member Social. New Member Chair - We like to meet our new members when they join, so we invite them to a New Member Social, which we hold on the Monday before the third Wednesday of each month. But we're a pretty busy group of people, and not everyone can make it to one, even though we keep you on the invitation list for three or four months. If you have never been to a New Member Social and would like to come to one, please check the box in the bottom right corner of the first page of each Nugget News, and contact the New Member Chair listed there. We need to know in advance, so please don't just show up or we won't have a cookie for you! Thanks, Dick and Julia |

Kudos to Welcome Wagon’s Sharon Chittock who is on her way to Dallas as a Pillsbury Bakeoff Finalist (at publication the winner will have been announced; check Bakeoff.com for her entry recipe and status). Sharon is competing in the Old El Paso Mexican Favorites category and is sure to impress those judges with her Cravin’ Crab Enchiladas. . Linda Kuester is approaching the half-way mark in her therapy treatment. By mid-April she’ll know how effective the treatment has been and what’s next in her treatment program. She continues to be at home throughout, feeling fortunate to be doing well with wonderful support at her side and a new 3 week old granddaughter close at hand. Keep Linda in your thoughts… . And, congratulations to Caryl and Doug Fairfull on their 25th Wedding Anniversary, which they celebrated on a Tahitian cruise! At the March 19 General Meeting, Welcome Wagon Club of the Gold Country presented a check for $1,000.00 to each one of the three charities that were voted on last year. Representatives of the charities spoke eloquently about their personal involvement in the mission and goals of their organizations. Suzanne Gulick, Program Director of Child Advocates of Nevada County, told of the urgent need for more child advocates to serve the needs of 90 children in the court dependency system, and she invited members to consider volunteering. Presently there are only 31 active CASAs serving only 45 of the children. Our contribution will be used for materials to train new volunteers. Richard Crandall, Executive Director of Sierra Services for the Blind, stated awareness of blindness needs to increase since one in four adults at age 80 will become legally blind. With Nevada County having a large senior population, this organization's services will be increasingly necessary. Our contribution will be used to fund programs, counseling, and services for the blind of all ages. As Founder and Director of Women of Worth, Sandy Schmidt spoke about assisting families in crisis, especially those escaping domestic violence and abuse, by providing temporary shelter, food, household items, clothing, personal care items, and other tangibles to meet the needs of the individual family members. The organization needs adequate office space as well as a house to provide extended shelter for the women and their children. Our contribution will be the foundation of this new building fund.

One of the reasons the name change issue was raised was confusion with Welcome Wagon International, who hired “Basket Ladies” to distribute coupons and samples to new members of the community. Our club was started by one of those ladies, however we have not been associated with that commercial organization for many years. We would no longer need to always explain that we are not the “Basket Lady group” when discussing our club with others. Many members have commented that this is a move that is long overdue. The Name Change Contest that was announced in the March Nugget News brought forth 56 great suggestions from our membership. After pouring over all of these submissions and much back and forth discussion, the committee has chosen the name: “SIERRA WELCOME CLUB” which was submitted by Don and Loretta Lawson. This name will be presented to the membership for a vote at our all-member luncheon at the Stonehouse Restaurant on May 21st. If the new name fails to receive the necessary two-thirds vote, then our current name will stand. Be sure to attend the Stonehouse luncheon on Wednesday, May 21st so your vote can be counted. |

Each year the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools Office & the Nevada County Library select a book for the Nevada County Reads event. This year the book is Nature Noir by Jordan Fisher Smith. Nature Noir is a cross between a detective story and a nature-lover’s account of the beauty of the Sierra Foothills. It reads a little like a novel, but it’s all true! As part of the Nevada County Reads effort, Dan and Betsy St. John will be coordinating Welcome Wagon members who want to read and discuss this book as part of the Nevada County Reads event. The discussions will probably take place some time in mid February. If you are interested in joining this year’s reading group, send an e-mail to bdstjohn@pacbell net or call 820-1100.
